The strange things you discover

November 23, 2006

Being forced to use bottled water to feed the little fella has led to a strange discovery: he seems to be less gassy.

We’re not sure if it is just because he is older – baby’s become less gassy as their digestive system matures – or if using bottled water is better. It seems quite strange to both of us that he burps and farts a lot less now. He even seems to poo a little easier than before.

Of course we are boiling the bottle water, as we did with tap water before. Our tap water discolours things over a long period of time, so it wouldn’t surprise me if there is some substances in it that may not the best thing for a young baby.

Whatever the case may be, he’s definitely grunting a whole lot less these days.

Water woes continue in Vancity

November 23, 2006

The boil-water advisory hit a week today without any sign of letting up. Adding to the problem was a test sample from the western part of the city that contained the E. coli bacteria.

What surprised me most about this finding was how it was handled. Health authorities found the bacteria in the water Wednesday, but have failed to come back with another test since then.

They say something will be available tomorrow, but it’s pretty dumb to throw a scare into the public that reminds them of Walkerton and not follow-up with a conclusive answer for two days.

For the most part the health authorities have done a good job calming people down. Information they have released over the past week has slowed the run on water – the fact many suburbs have clean water has helped too. And they have done a good job of telling people how to use the water in their taps.

We’ve been getting our water from the in-laws in Coquitlam, so I’m not sure if the stores have been replenished yet. But it has been a pain in the ass. As I said before, it’s pretty strange living near a coastal rain forest and not being able to drink the water.
