Maybe we should send this off to the Ugly Doll people…
Everyone is nice to a pregnant woman
November 22, 2006My colleague is entering her second trimester this month, and I can see she is beginning to “glow”. Momma J had it when she was pregnant too. It’s that aura pregnant women give off – on good days – that makes everyone around them a little kinder and gentler.
Today, we went to a meeting together for one of our clients. Everyone in the room was male, so she was already popular. But when they all found out she was pregnant – she had to announce it to let them know I’d be taking over the account – they really warmed up to her.
One fellow told a couple of great jokes about when his wife was pregnant. And I could tell others in the room were being a little softer than usual due to the fact she is expecting.
When Momma J was pregnant people would help her with all kinds of stuff from carrying groceries to intervening when a homeless person was being too aggressive. At work they’d give her the benefit of the doubt when she screwed up, and nobody batted an eye when she missed work due to an appointment or sickness.
I have to admit, I’m a lot more appreciative and kinder to pregnant women after seeing what my wife went through – and she had it pretty easy compared to most.
On quiet evenings when I get a chance to reflect on things, I believe becoming a father has made me a lot more tolerant and friendly to everyone. It’s something I wish we had done much earlier.
